The term «organic agriculture» stands for a method of cultivation and breeding that admits only the use of natural substances, that are found in nature, excluding the use of synthetic substances such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides and genetically modified organisms (O.G.M.).
Farming means developing a production model that avoids excessive exploitation of natural resources, and in particular of the soil, water and air. It wants to use those resources within a development model that will last in time (sustainable development). 
Organic farms have undertaken to increase plant and animal biodiversity to keep in balance the ecosystem, in order to encourage crop protection from animals and insects and to rebuild, maintain and increase soil fertility. It is a production method that is defined and governed by a Community regulation and subjected to inspection and certification by bodies authorised by the Ministry of agriculture and forestry.

To produce organic Parmigiano Reggiano in addition to complying with all regulations laid down by the rules of the Consortium for the protection, organic farming procedures must be respected.

  • Animal feeding
    The fodder and the food that the animals eat come exclusively from organic farming, which prohibits the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides and are free of genetically modified organisms.
  • Breeding and welfare of the animals
    The animals are raised on pasture or in an open area. Spacious and comfortable rooms are housed in sheds of litter.
  • Veterinary cures. Animals are treated according to the principles of homeopathy.
  • Milk processing
    The organic milk is processed using rennet free of preservatives. The processing is done in boilers and in containers reserved for the biological transformation and therefore separated from other processes.

June 1st 2012 saw the entry into force of the equivalence agreement signed between the USA and the European Union: products certified as organic according to the regulations in force in one of the two may be sold freely and may include on the packaging the organic logo provided for by the country of destination, in compliance with the conditions established in the equivalence agreement.

The organic Parmigiano Reggiano we produce in the factories of our integrated production and supply chain is made with NOP-equivalent production methods, so it can be freely exported to the American market and labelled as an ORGANIC product.
